Raychelle Harris, PhD |
Dr. Raychelle Harris received her Bachelor's degree in American Sign Language (ASL) from Gallaudet University, and her Master's degree in Deaf Education from Western Maryland College (WMC) in 1995 and 2000, respectively. After a decade of teaching ASL and Deaf culture in different settings, she returned to Gallaudet in 2004 for her doctoral studies in the areas of education and linguistics, with her dissertation topic focused on ASL discourses in academic settings. In 2008, Raychelle joined Gallaudet University as a faculty, teaching with the Departments of Interpretation, ASL, and Deaf Studies. In 2010, Raychelle along with Dr. MJ Bienvenu, established, co-directed, and taught with the Masters in Sign Language Education (MASLED) program at Gallaudet, preparing teachers of sign languages for over a decade. As of 2021, Raychelle is now focusing mainly on her authoring work, interpreting and translation, and other projects.
One of the many cherished highlights of her career include co-authoring the second and third editions of TRUE+WAY ASL digital textbook and curriculum in 2017 and 2020. In addition, Raychelle collaborated with Irene Leigh, Jean F. Andrews, and Topher González Ávila to publish the second edition of Deaf Culture: Exploring Deaf Communities of the United States book in 2022, four years after publishing the first edition in 2018. Raychelle holds Professional Certification with the American Sign Language Teachers Association (ASLTA) and is certified with the Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) and a Texas Court Interpreter. |
