Examples of Teaching Lectures & Activities
The lecture videos were originally created for courses within the Masters in Sign Language Education (MA-SLED) graduate program for ASL teachers at Gallaudet University. Unlike my other ASL publications, they were much less rehearsed, the editing is informal, the language is more spontaneous and conversational, and the information was presented specifically to students in the MASLED program.
Naming in American Sign Language
In this video, I summarize Dr. Samuel J. Supalla's "The Book of Name Signs: Naming in American Sign Language" published in 1992. I also pose questions and share relevant anecdotes throughout the video.
Framing and Reinforcement in ASL Courses
In this video, I discuss George Lakoff's framing theory, and how this is relevant to the current trend to include "voice policies" in ASL course syllabi. I discuss analogies such as gay marriage and patriotic act as well as smoke-free campuses. Then I move on to discussing reinforcing ASL use in class, and merits in moving away from negative reinforcement and towards positive reinforcement, discussing Skinner's work.
Technology and ASL Teaching: Friend or Foe?
In this video, I discuss different types of technology we can use for our classes, as we teach ASL...online or onsite, intended to introduce new MA-SLED students to the technology we'll cover in our courses.
ASL for Heritage Learners: Seasons, Weather & Water Cycle
We encourage experimentation with video and media techniques in teaching about academic content in the MASLED program. Here I discuss seasons, the weather and water cycle with chroma key editing, pictures and text.
Academic ASL Analysis & Worksheets
Someone took a picture of this and sent this over to me. It was of an interpreting student's workbook, and the assignment was to analyze my use of Academic ASL. Pretty cool!
